MY CURRENT HEROES—
I thought it would be cool to list off the TOP FIVE people in comics that really jazz me up right now. No particular order:
1-ROBERT KIRKMAN—Despite the recent controversy of his “mission statement” on comicbookresources.com, I still think the man is one cool mutha. His creator owned work make old old OLD concepts seem fresh, even to the point to where I’ll actually buy a superhero comic book! Yeah, crazy. He’s a guy that loves to stir things up and he’s completely down to Earth, with quite the fun calm personality to boot. He doesn’t seem to be all into himself. He’s rocking things all over the place and even Image Comics recognized that and made him an official Partner in their company. You rock Kirkman!
2-GRANT GOULD—This is a guy who I think soon EVERYONE will know. He’s made his name on sketch card markets. Now he’s got gigs with Lucasfilm and a creator owned book coming out this fall (Wolvesofodin.com). He’s got quite the unique personality and the funniest sense of humor I have encountered in a long time, very similar to my own. But also he can be completely professional when he has to be. Some cannot turn it on and off like that. He can! His cartoony style has really won me over and I absolutely worship everything he’s doing.
3-JIM MAHFOOD—Always in my top 10, Foodone has been continuing to push his work to its limits and make things better. After making it big in comics, he’s scored gigs with Colt 45 beer and other advertising gigs, including work on the Sarah Silverman show. His art style has defiantly evolved and I think its to the point now where he really has confidence in what he’s doing. His live art shows are a true event and I hope to see one soon. He recently redid his website at www.40ozcomics.com
4—EDUARDO RISSO—I am still a faithful buyer of 100 BULLETS just because of this guy’s art. He can sequential the shit out of anyone else in this industry right now. I don’t know how he does it. But I defiantly find him an inspiration as to how to lay out a story. Every page itself is one big piece of art, rather than a bunch of panels. He just kicks ass. Plain and simple.
5—CHRIS WESTON—I love, LOVE this guy’s art. So detailed and elegant. Very comics, but very detailed. He doesn’t bullshit his backgrounds. Every page you just want to pour over every buttery nuance of detail and time spent on it. You look at his page and you are in awe.
Look these people up if you haven’t checked them out yet. I hereby endorse and support these cats totally. Love em.
