Anyone who knows me that one thing I love more than comics are motion pictures. The power of cinema. I love it. Well, I’ve compiled a list (IN ORDER) of my personal top 25 films of all time and comments on such. Lets begin shall we?
25-Happiness-Easily one of the most hated or most beloved films on this list. An extremely challenging film to sit through cause of some of its content. But I absolutely love this movie. I think its deep, funny and well done. I like movies that make me meet what they are saying with it half-way. This is a movie that does that for me.
24-300-Zack Snyder has done the impossible for me. Remaking my beloved DAWN OF THE DEAD and making actually pretty good. Here, he gives us epic eye candy and its damn well done. I loved it. Makes me want to hit the gym after seeing it. Lets see how he tackles WATCHMEN next year!
23-Meaning of Life-No list of mine would be complete without a mention of Monty Python! Of all their films, I hold a special place in my heart for this one, often overlooked. I like it. It segues skits into logical ways and its damn funny, and damn quotable.
22-Pulp Fiction-Speaking of Quotable, this film, by far the most quotable film of the 90’s. This one seems to always win me over out of all the 90’s movies. The innovative style, the misshapen story structure and casting, its just damn good It makes my love of film feel like the end of a penis.
21-Office Space-Another quotable movie. I love this one. After working in an office for five years, I totally love it even more. Its all about letting go, something I wish I could do!
20-Kill Bill #1-2-Yeah, I’m putting them both together cause they are one long movie really. And so damn well done. Spaghetti western mixed with martial arts film style. Great soundtrack, girls kicking ass for once. Very quotable and very well beloved. The wife turned me on to this movie and she gets great kudos for that.
19-Conan the Barbarian-One of my favorites as a kid and very awesome. I love epic movies and this feels it. I think what does it for me is Basil’s epic score as well. One of the best scores ever put to tape.
18-Ghostbusters-When I think of 80’s flicks I watched over and over, this is at the top of the list. So damn funny, and even action packed. I played Ghostbusters A LOT as a kid. Hell, if I had a lot of cash, I’d probably buy one of those proton packs too! You’d see me walking around conventions with one on. “GHOSTBUSTAS, WHADDA WANT?!?!?”
17-Airplane-Easily, easily the funniest film ever made. It still holds up in my book.
16-American Beauty-This came out when I was in my “art film” phase and totally won me over. I saw it NINE TIMES in the theater and loved it each time. Everyone’s acting is so damn superb in this flick…sorry, FILM. I love things that go deeper than outside meaning. This is the perfect movie for that.
15-Boogie Nights-I love this movie. Very quotable and a fun watch. I know PT Anderson uses a lot of Robert Altman tricks, but this movie has always stuck with me. Great cast and a lot of fun.
14-The Great Dictator-Probebly my favorite physical comedy of all time. It is slap sticky in parts and then very historically poignant in others. Chaplin’s masterpiece.
13-Superman (1978)-When I was a kid, this was THE movie. Great score by John Williams. Great directing job by Dick Donner. I believed a man could fly. Chris Reeve made me believe it.
12-Evil Dead 2-I am so in love with this movie. Slapstick, over the top grossness and obserd. Yes, love it.
11-Dawn of the Dead-Romero’s finest film. Social commentary, great dialog and great scary moments. The best. Even such a fan that I have been to the mall its been shot in four times!
And now, your top ten!
10-Clerks-I love all the Kevin Smith films, but this one holds a special place in my heart. I even drove 13 hours to New Jersey just to go to the convenience store where the film was shot! Yeah, I’m that big of a fan. Its quotable, funny and for its time, very influential on me. That last speech about knowing who you are and what you do spoke to me at a time when I really needed to hear it.
9-Metropolis-I saw the Georgio Moroder version in film class and I gotta say, I really fell in love with this movie. It’s the start of all great science fiction and drama for me. Very visually enthralling and a masterpiece of German Cinema. Films after it can only succeed it in look and style. It is unmatched.
8-Free Enterprise-A dumb one, but I like movies that remind me of me, and this movie undoubtedly fits that category. A film about two hardcore STAR TREK fans turning 30 and incredibly social aware geekiness. That’s me to a T!
7-Citizen Kane-Orson Wellss is one of my idols. This is his masterpiece, and by the way, the greatest film ever made. Innovative, ahead of its time, just pure genius. Anyone who doesn’t at least acknowledge this film’s greatness can suck it.
6-Fight Club-I love it when I say this is one of my favorite movies cause it makes people who haven’t seen it scratch their head. Everyone thought it was some sort of “bloodsport” type of movie, when its not at all. Its one big social commentary about consumerism and post 90’s fallout. Brilliant and very quotable. In Durden we trust.
5- Lord of the Rings-Again, I count this as one big movie. All 12 hours of it! Epic, EPIC movie. Brilliant. Awe inspiring. Amazing. Unmatched. Legendary. Great acting, great score, effects, story… just fucking everything!
4-The Big Labowski-My favorite comedy, hands down. I’ve watched this movie a hundred times and still laugh each time. So many little moments and lines in the flick make it the most quotable and memorable film on my list.
3-Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan-What list by me wouldn’t feature some mention of the greatest, most influential thing in my life: Star Trek! Why not go with the best? This movie is the best Star Trek ever got. Epic, dramatic and fun to watch. It took a 5 year old Adam Talley and made him become a Star Trek fan, despite the fact that he never knew what Star Trek was up until this movie. It opened a whole new world for me. And, and… it’s the only film I still cry at. And I don’t mind sharing that embarrassing fact.
2-High Fidelity-Probebly surprised to see this here eh? This film is about me. I am Rob Gordon. I am Barry and Dick, the co-workers at the Record Store. I am all about music and this film is about that. Its also about failing at relationships and up till about 6 years ago, that was totally me. I just begged to want to think of something else, find the girl of my dreams and move on with my life. All the while, the music was always there. If you want to see something autobiographical about me, this is it.
1-A Clockwork Orange-Lastly, we come to the end. Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange. I remember watching this film as a teenager at first attracted by the idea of nudity in a late night movie, only to emerge 2.3 hours later with an appreciation of what FILM was. I understood it then. This movie made me want to love cinema as an artform and that it did. I’ve analyzed films ever since. In college I wrote a 25 page paper, dissecting this film and everything about it. Its just the greatest thing to me. Dark, deep, philosophically challenging and well directed/acted. A perfect movie for art school nerds like me. With this movie, Stanley Kubrick became my favorite film director, and I have never forgot my roots ever since.
NEXT TIME I DO A LIST: 25 movies so bad, they are awesome!
