I read a blog post from James Calway, the dude who does those awesome fan movies called STAR TREK NEW VOYAGES (now called PHASE II). He said he has an upcoming cameo in the film, as does Jeff, his "Spock" on the show. He said that the design of the Enterprise is so vastly different than what it should be, that longtime fans will hate it. HATE IT. As a fan of this ship, I was heartbroken and its been a long waiting process to get a look at this thing. Would they fuck it up?
Well, mere minutes ago, I got my first look:

My initial reaction is that it looks like the NCC-1701 revealed in one of my favorite STAR TREK moments: That being Kirk being transported to it in STAR TREK: The Motion Picture. They took almost 10 minutes driving Kirk to the ship and slowly revealing its new look. Not that much different from what was the original series. You could see every panel, like it was a real thing. So tehy went with that.
The nacells are okay, cause I'll get used to them. I do like the new deflector dish. Its not simply a bright blue hole, like in the Kirk/Spock era movies. Its the same shape disc from the original series, but reflective and shows it does indeed have power. The phaser turrets are exactly like the first 6 movies, all being on the 3 sections on the bottom of the saucer. I also don't see any lettering on the bottom! The hell?
What I HATE is the design between the saucer and the engineering decks. HATE that. First, the dish part is too far forward. Aerodynamically, this would create drag. Of course, Space is a vaccuum and that doesn't matter, but it gives it a clunky type of look. Second, it tapers too soon after the nacelle wings begin. If anythin, the wings should have tapered up more than just going straight up. They could have made it more aerodynamic with the nacelles at more of a angle, similar to Zimmerman's design of the ENTERPRISE-E for FIRST CONTACT. I liked that design the instant I saw it.... despite the fact that the ENTERPRISE looked like a long dart.
This design looks like a thicker shortened version of the Kirk era motion pictures ENTERPRISE taped to a newer (supposed to be sleek looking) ship stern. I really go from loving it to hating it. I cannot decide. This weekend, the first TREK trailer will be attached to QUANTUM OF SOLACE and also online. I will then see the ship in action and make a decision then. (Like they have to fuckin' please me or something! lol)
Sorry to geek out on all of you here but its the truth. As a kid, I put together the model of the ENTERPRISE maybe a hundred times. No lie. I had all the metal ERTL dinky ENTERPRISES and even today, I got the models and ARt Asylum toys. When I first saw STAR TREK III in the theater (as I related the story here a while back), I cried when the Enterprise blew up. Yeah, cried right in the theater. How could they do that to a character I loved so much? Cried for an inanimate object. Go ahead, call me what you will.
Anyway, fans and non-fans have a long wait till next summer. I'm still pumped and excited. I'll be a skeptic till they put the sucker on the screen. I still have high hopes they put something wonderful together. After reading about the 4 released scenes today, I can see that perhaps the story will be a good one.
Geek out with me man.
