YES WE CAN!

Wow. What a night. Historic Night as they say.

I remember a conversation back in 1999 me and a few of my beloved co-workers at the Cinema at Mt. Pleasant were having. About who would be a president first: a woman or a black man. They all agreed that a woman would be elected before an African American. I was flabbergasted. Not that I am a woman-basher or something, but it just seemed more logical to me. I've seen more gender-bias than racism in my time. How could it not be so?

Tonight, that prediction was proved wrong. Obama, a symbol for all (not just African Americans) Americans, is our next president. Amazing.

I cannot imagine what this must feel like for some people. To see this person get this opportunity. To relate (as a geek would), I recall many young black actresses that were inspired by Nichelle Nichols as UHURA on the Bridge of the Enterprise on STAR TREK, working as an equal. Expecially in the 60's, a time of great tribulation for some. but those young kids who saw her on the screen knew that they could perhaps be an actor one day, one that doesn't get to play just a damn MAID. And now for this generation, yes, you can be president.

I was scared at this election. I wanted to have faith that we evolved beyond racism and seeing it as a main issue. And thank God we have. At least, I hope. America has spoken and its true. The biggest voice won.

Folks, I didn't vote for Obama simply because the was black. Far from it. In fact, not once did he even pull the race card. He simply pushed himself as one thing: AMERICAN. I love that term. I've always hated going out of my way to say "African American" or "black." When in reality, we are all one. Why single it out? Thats why I don't listen to comedians whose whole shtick is "white people do this, and black people do that." Its dumb and ignorant. And I remember in college that I was told I was SUPPOSED to feel guilty because I am a white male. I don't subscribe to that. When I said that, I was told I was IGNORING the truth.

Was I really? Was I so nieve that indeed I was sticking my head in the sand to believe that there was nothing wrong in the world? Did it really exist around me and I just chose to ignore it? Did the world utopia taught me on things like my beloved STAR TREK show me that it was simply, fiction and cannot happen in my time? Well, tonight I hope proves that wrong in some way.

Well folks.... I voted for him because he had one simple message: HOPE AND CHANGE. While his opponent did nothing but mudsling, Obama stayed course and said HOPE AND CHANGE. He told us to hope, while the other guy tried to duck and cover and toss out hate bombs. Deep in my heart, I hoped that we as one people could change. I hold hope that we have evolved beyond pettiness of racism and the like. And change... man. Its no secret that the last 8 years under Bush I have hated every second of it. Everything. Economy, the war, everything. So now, hopefully Obama can keep his promise of change. Education, moral values, responsibility, war, economy, renewable energy, global warming, equality, etc, can all be put into play and get back on track. We've strayed too far away in the last few years. Its time to fix that.

Thank you to all who voted. Thanks to those who care and who looked closely at the issues, not just the heresy and popular name. So now lets unite and change things folks. Lets rock it. Lets finally as one people (one race) move forward. Please. Lets unite. Peace on earth.

And to those around the world who may find some way to my little blog here: I hope we can make up for our past mistakes now and make change happen. Please forgive us and help us along. We will need it cause we got a huge task before us.

Lets all get to work shall we?

Luvs, T

As a fellow American, I proudly support the democratic process and believe it demonstrated itself in our election. I do not magically believe now that Barack has the right set of ideas, and I believe McCain was much more gracious last night. However, I have always said I don't believe Barack has any malicious intentions and sincerely means to do the best for the country. I simply disagree with how he plans to go about it.

Should Barack prove to be correct and we have much more improvement in the coming years, I will gladly accept that I was wrong and not say otherwise. I also expect the Barack supporters to be ready to "eat it", should the guy fall flat on his face.

Barack wasn't my choice, but he will be my president. And to that, I support him and pray he will be a great president.

Democrats wanted their chance to show they can do a better job than Republicans/Bush. Well, now you've got the chance, so time to stop talking and show us some results.
