Yes, this past weekend was the MOTOR CITY COMIC CON. I passed on doing the show this year because of all the money I am pouring into SanDiego, and Heroes con. Plus around the time I had to pay for my table is when I lost my job and money was tight, so we decided to pass on it for this year. I hated to do that, cause Motor City is always a fun show and a profitable one for me. Oh well. I at least wanted to go and see the friends there. (and do some shopping!)
So off we went after me working the night before. We arrive and walk the show. We went on a sunday, hoping for slower crowds and better deals at the vendors. I didn't see any real super deals from them. Must be an economy thing. The wife was looking for Family Guy figures and found none. Seems they had every other type of figure there but that one. So she was bummed. But Scott had a good time...
I was glad some of my friends finally got to meet him and see him face to face. We dressed him up in a nice Superman outfit for the occasion. I was gonna make him a Red STAR TREK shirt (cause his name is Scott.. get it?) But couldn't find a plain red shirt or onezee to make one. So we went with what we had.
One thing on my agenda was to meet Michael Hogan (Col. Tigh from BSG). It was early, so we headed to his table and I shook hands with him. He just leapt from around the table, pulled on his cap over his eyes and sat on the floor next to Scott and kept talking to him. He said "please, snap alot of pics if you want to." So the wife did and I paid for the autograph and pic with him. He sat there playing, getting him to smile. It was deeply cute and funny. He was dancing around him, waving his arms and legs, like a monkey. He kept saying to us "good parenting guys!" I don't know exactly what that meant, but I took it as though he meant that he looks happy and therefore a reflection of us. So the Col. complimented me. HA! Finally, he got up, put his arm around me and we took a pic together. Then he sat down to sign my pic. "TO ADAM: FRAK EM ALL!" it says. While signing, I mentioned that I knew some friends that he was with in Dallas recently. He said that he drank alot and ate alot down there with them. I told him, "yeah, I heard." He laughed and we shook again. Somewhere in there, "KAT" from BSG walked up and they hugged. I said hi to her, but wasn't really into getting her autograph today. I was on a limited budget after all. So with that, we left and moved on, laughing the whole way about what transpired.
When you meet a celebirty, and you buy an autograph, you basically are paying for a moment with them. UNLESS you are getting a non personalized pic to sell on ebay, like a dealer would or something. But I felt that what he gave us was waaaaaay more than a moment. A deeply cool and nice guy. I don't often go up and get autographs from celebrities. Mostly TREK related people up to this point. But I'm very glad for that experience. Plus maybe one day Scott will see the pics and the time he got to meet a cylon and doesn't rememeber it! (that is, if he even grows into liking BATTLESTAR... which he will if I have anything to say about it!) I think my wife was impressed as hell. Lets see her make playfully fun of me being a BSG fan anymore! HAHAAHAHAAHAAA
We sat and ate and then browsed the dealers. All I bought was a SKETCH mag with Adam Hughes in it, and the STAR TREK comic trade which ties NEMESIS and the new STAR TREK movie together and explains the villian a bit more. A worthy find. I also got some free comics from various friends from the show. I ran into Jim, Brett, Nate, Jay and his wife, Darrell, Sean, Dennis... tons of friends from the shows of the past. I'm quite proud of the community of artists I've dwelled in. I also briefly talked with Tim Bradstreet and he was a super cool, down to earth guy. I've looked up to him as an artist and person for years now.
I was getting ready to leave when I got a text from Mark Walters (From our many late night talkshoe podcasts) that he finally arrived and told me where he was. We trekked back in and found him. He had a long chat and it was great to finally meet the dude face to face. After spending almost the last 3 years talking over the phone and internet with him and the others, I'm glad to finally be able to put faces with names, other than pics I see. He was exactly the same in person as on the show. I was glad we finally met in person. Look forward to seeing him again in a month at HEROES con.
Finally around 2-3, we left and headed for home. I barely made it to a restaurant about 40 miles from home so we could stop, eat and change the bots. Then headed home where I immediately passed out. and didn't wake up till 12 hours later. All in all, a great time. Wish I coulda been there all weekend. But I got plenty of other things coming up to make up for it. Call this, a pregame of what is to come for me convention wise this year.
Cheers, T
p.s. I'll do the show next year folks. Promises.
