Top 10 HALLOWEEN DVDs!
Inspired by my pal Grant Gould's list, I present my top ten favorite films to watch around Halloween time. Not necessarilly the most scariest or zaniest, but the movies I love to watch that always make the traditions of the holiday to me. Its a mix of actual scary movies, fun horror movies and in the spirit type of sing-songy movies.
10-GARFIELD'S HALLOWEEN SPECIAL- Screw the Charlie Brown Great Pumpkin one. This is the one I loved. Lots of great songs and kinda scary moments for kids. Like the part where teh actual pirate ghosts are chasing after Garfield and creep into the cabin while he hides, then they burst in. then chase him down the path to the rowboat. Scary shit for kids man.
9-ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW- Seems like some channel is always running this ad nauseum, so it definately reminds me of the holiday. I know its hokey and dumb but fuck it, I like it. Its good old rock n' roll with an odd subject matter. But it was all written with honesty from a guy who wants to admit publically that he loved women's clothing. You gotta let a chap have his vision, right? And some of the characters and music are quite iconic. I don't really get into dressing up like them or going to theaters tossing toast and paper towel around. But for those that do, I'm sure there's tradition and fun in that. For me, I'll just enjoy the songs. Plus I think everyone had a crush on Columbia as a kid.
8-BASKETCASE- I'd put this on my scariest movie list. Something about this one creeps me the hell out. Even though its cheesy and all that with the obvious puppetry. But still the concept is sound and freaky. I still cover my eyes in parts when I know Belial is gonna burst out and start some shit.
7-NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3: THE DREAM WARRIORS: Easily the best of the bunch. A rockin' soundtrack and the start of Freddy being a huge one liner goof. But not completely the clown shoe yet as he would be in 4-6. And the part with his skeleton fighting harkens back to the great Harryhousen fights in Jason and the Argonauts. I love this one most of all.
6-FRIDAY THE 13th 6: JASON LIVES: Again, easily the best of the bunch. With its gothic horror overtones, Frankenstien inspiration (one of the stores in the film is called KARLOFF grocieries for god's sake!), and the start of Jason's supernatural strength. Each of his kills make you go "WHOA!" Some great T&A, bloody over the top-superheroish type of kills and Tommy's obsession. Plus a cameo by original killer Corey Feldman. I had nightmares about Jason staring at the camera while under the water, still alive down there, waiting.... This is as good as this series got.
5-RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD- I used to be scared of this movie as a kid. Only saw it once, and that damn tar monster scared the shit out of me. But recently re-watched it as an adult and fell in love with it. Its hugely funny and a great watch for fans of the splatter punk/comedy-horror genre. Some good puppetry effects and a great premise.
4-SORORITY HOUSE MASSACRE 2- I have an affinity for a movie where a bunch of dumb teen girls are being terrorized by some baddie. And this one is the best of the best. Hard to find on DVD now, but well worth it. Lots of what you want. Girls running around in their knickers, being chased by a madman and twist endings. Lots of fun.
3-EVIL DEAD 2- What else can be said about this movie? Its just simply great. Creepy, scary at times (the thing in the basement and the crazy Tom Sullivan effects) but also halarious!
2-FRIGHT NIGHT- I am not a fan of vampire fiction, except where this movie comes in. Its scary (Amanda Beerse's teeth in the end, holy shit!) A killer 80's soundtrack, melting faces, great effects, iconic characters and Roddy friggin' McDowell! I love this movie. This desperately needs a special edition DVD.
1-THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT- This movie divides people so much. Many hate it because you don't see anything. Well, thats the damn point folks. The monster in my head is more scary than anything you could see on screen. If you showed something, then we could access it and dissect it easier and tell why its fake. But there's nothing. Just you and your head. What was there? What did they see? Those thoughts fucked with my head so much. Still do. Watch this in tune with the CURSE OF THE BLAIR WITCH mockumentary on the dvd. I'd say the documentary is scarier than the actual movie. The kids' drawings of the witch, the stories and all that. Holy shit! Scary scary stuff. This movie fucked me up so much. (part of the reason why I am looking forward to PARANORMAL ACTIVITY. Its the same cookie from what I hear) BTW, do NOT see the sequel. Worst sequel of all time.
