Dunno if you folks saw this but give it a watch HERE and continue on with this blog posting.
Eric Powell's video is funny and makes some bold statements. And believe me, I 100% support the idea of creator owned comics. Hell, thats what I've done for the last 18+ years!!! But while I think this video is great and funny, I allow the following thoughts as well.
1-DC/MARVEL characters are monopolizing the industry. Sure. I know I get more requests for known characters than sketches of my characters. Its the nature of the beast. but I will be the first to admit that some of these characters are really cool and that comes with some nostalgia on my part. I grew up with some of these characters. So I have to like them. Its hard for the little guy like me to fight against that. But I totally understand why it dominates the industry.
2-For shops and consumers to just go out and support creator owned comics isn't enough. Its the responsibility of creators to make and develop the BEST WORK THEY CAN. Starting with good ideas, good writing, engaging scenes-story-dialog and concepts. Then execute it with amazing or interesting visuals and just bring all they can to the table. Put themselves in the work and their unique vision or personality into it and make it their own. And finally, use every means possible to get it out to the public. Online, in person, in the streets, etc. It will not catch fire if it remains locked away in your portfolio, sketchbook or computer file. Get it out there and learn from your mistakes in public and get better. Enjoy the journey of creation as a creator. Then you will produce good creator owned content.
I feel attacking the big two isn't fair anymore. I think its up to us creators to show the public WHY our comics are good and can be as entertaining if not moreso than the big two comics. And for you aspiring creators, there's no quick money in it. Its a lifelong struggle. But it is sooooooo rewarding man. Believe me, its well worth it. I got a book coming in the mail soon that I put a year and a half of my life into and its going to be arriving here in a couple weeks. There's no greater feeling than that. Is that disposable entertainment? Not to me.
So focus on making good product and getting it out there. Let people know about you and your creator owned works!!! Let the big two companies have their place and let them stay cool. But you, keep evolving. Keep dreaming. Keep working hard! Cause in the end, if you want it bad enough, it will come to you.
Lastly, um... please DO support creator owned comics! For example, you can order my ANNA POCALYPSE full color graphic novel right now by clicking HERE!!!! Feed my child! Don't let me get fucked in the arse by superhero cock!
Much love, T
;)
