The kids/dog woke me up super early and so out of boredom, you get a bonus blog today. With a subject other than my shit!
I wanna give some props to MAGAZINES. I grew up reading magazines and today its a lost art. Magazines was my internet. It was our first porn. First porn rag I ever had was an issue of GALLERY. I eventually had a stack of Hustlers and other things, but they got old fast and I gave em away. And even though the section is dwindling in stores nationwide, I still go to the section to check em out. I still score some for bathroom reading and still collect some.
When I was a kid these were my favs: MAD, Starlog, Any movie special magazine, Star Trek Fan Club, Nintendo Power, Wizard, He-Man Magazine, Circus, Hit Parader, Metal Edge, Guitar World, Action Figure Monthly.
Today I still read: Retro Gamer, Filmfax, Metal Hammer, Doctor Who Magazine, HORRORHOUND (A big one!), Classic Rock (Occasional), And the occasional collectors guide to toys, A Writer's Magazine, Special Editions of Uncut if I like the band and a few others.
I tossed all my old mags long ago and during one of my many moves. I regret it. Nothing like peeling out an old rag and reliving the memories. Sometimes you feel super smart and psychic. Like you get an old Starlog and it will have a blurb in it that says something like "Star Trek II is being made right now. We wonder if it will be good or not." And for a second, you think "Hey! I know the future!" HA. Its in these old magazines that I got info on deleted scenes never seen in the theater or exclusive making of stuff. Things they used to put on DVDs and now, not so much... other than a generic making of with not much craft behind the scenes type of stuff.
And the way of the world is changing magazines. You can subscribe and read them via ipad now and that takes away from the experience for me. While its super convenient and a space saver, there's nothing like grabbing an old magazine and smelling the ink and sitting on the pot, drop a deuce and read old articles. I still do and always will. I can't do that with an ipad. I'm afraid I'll drop it in the tank... which I've done to some poor magazines in the past. Regrettable but replaceable. Ipads, no.
Soon, gone will be the experience of going to a store and browsing the mag racks. And then books. CDs. Vinyl. DVDs, etc. It will all be digital. While I have sometimes switched formats to the new digital and convenient version, I still kick myself because I've lost something special. Something that connects me to the old days I love.
Well, I'm holding onto the past for as long as I can. Print will never be dead in my mind. Besides, I need to roll up a magazine every now and then to swat flies and tap my puppy on the butt for pooping inside the house!
