BLACK SABBATH! 8-6-12 Clarkston, MI DTE Music Center
So last night, I saw Black Sabbath for the first time live. I've never seen them, nor have I seen Ozzy live at all. Seems like I'm the only one! So I was glad to get that monkey off my back. When I heard they were touring and lawn tickets were only $25, I felt stupid to pass it up. Too many times in the past I've hemmed and hawed about going to a show and the band either breaks up or someone key in the band passes away. And with Tommi Iommi's cancer scare and the fact that they are all in their 60's, I felt like I better jump on the chance. Morbid? Perhaps. But I seized the opportunity. I prefer memories of joy over regret.
We got lawn tickets but chose to stand on the wooded pavilian on the top of the hill. My photos didn't come out the greatest (see below). So I took some of these from a neighboring website. The band came out and played just about every song you'd want. I heard rumors about Ozzy's voice being out of tune (due to age). I'm happy to report that that rumor is utter BS. They came out and he sounded great! Only song where he was a bit off was "Into the Void." Perhaps played too high an octive for him to hit it, but still he sounded spectacular. He played with the audience over and over and it was great. He looked like he was having fun.
Geezer and Tommy sounded fucking awesome. I didn't hear one note that was off. Its amazing that these guys, well into their 60's sound way better than 99% of any band of youngsters out there. Every note, every solo, every riff, every jam was spot on. To see the riff master in action was definitely a highlight of the concert.
Tomy Clufetos did a killer drum solo too. Amazing drummer! Although my thoughts at times did go to Bill Ward's absence, its easy to see that they certainly don't miss him. They rocked it. No pyro or anything needed. Just the music. All the way from the opening track of Black Sabbath's first album, to the new album 13. Every song was spot on. Highlight songs for me was "Snowblind" "Fairies Wear Boots" and "Black Sabbath." Their performance of "God is Dead" was great too.
All in all, the show was phenominal. I honestly think I'd put it in my Top 5 concerts of all time that I've ever seen. These guys still kick your ass. And it was great to see the pioneers of a genre of music I love so much, see them do their thing live. And sound fucking amazing while they are doing it.
One note: The metal fans there were awesome. I saw no fights. Lots of partying. Everyone got along. But the one thing that really impressed me was all the kids there. There were tons of kids, especially in our area. They were metal shirts and head bobbed with every note and lick. Their parents were there encouraging them on. I was really moved by that. These are kids that should be into pop top 40 BS like everyone else. But here are their parents helping them see into a genre of music that they love so much, and showing them the greatest metal band of all time. It was a connection of generations that I really dug seeing in person. Grandparents, parents and kids all there together. It was awesome to witness. We say that "Rock is dead." Bullshit. We got a whole new generation of kids coming to keep it alive for us. Makes me very happy.
If you get the chance, check them out live on this tour. They sound tight, loud and great. Haven't missed a step.
Thanks to Matt for doing all the driving and buying me a Vodka. It was great to hang out with you, man. Lets do it again!
