Detroit Fanfare Con Report

Hey folks! I'm back from the show and what a doozie!

The show was held in the former Hyatt in Dearborn, now an Adoba Hotel. The remodel was nice looking. The show takes VERY good care of their artists, with great prices, a box of snacks and water, volunteers offer water around the show, free drinks, discounts and so much more. I speak very highly of the folks who put on this show. If you are an artist or vendor and want to be treated well, Fanfare does a great job of it.

This was my first show in the Detroit area in about three years. I've just either been too busy or focusing on other shows outside the state. So this was sort of a "homecoming" for me, and it felt really good. I saw a few old customers and they got some newer stuff of mine. Best part of all was being around all my local artist and writer friends again. I really missed them. Seeing what they are working on now and their successes always fuel me greatly.

I sold pretty decent, enough to make my expenses back. But the general hum of the show said it was steady, but people weren't buying. Its tough in the last quarter of the year because Christmas is coming and with the economy, wallets are tighter. People are more choosy. So when anyone plunks down anything on you, we're very grateful. Thanks everyone for supporting me and my fellow creators out there. We love you!

Another thing that was great was that I was set up to my brother Robert. This was sort of a 10 year anniversary for us because 10 years ago we met and now finally he's got a book of his work together. It was wonderful to see his enthusiasm about his finished product. It took a long time, but I think he'd tell you that it was worth it. He sold better than I did at my first con. I'm very proud of him.

All in all, I had a great time. I'm already missing everyone there. I got fueled, I got fired up and I am ready for 2014 to rock and roll. I'm gonna hit Detroit again next year at least in one of the shows, maybe both and we'll see what happens. I got some new ideas, some ideas to ponder. But for now, I am better focused on getting some new shit done and getting my books out. All I had was art and prints and the show and quite frankly, I was embarrassed not to be pushing my books. But that said, by next con in May, I'll have about SEVEN BOOKS to push! Reprints and new shit. Count on it.

So thanks to everyone who made this weekend a great one for me. Looking forward to next year already! (for a complete play by play, read my DIARY blog below this one. But for now, a few pics from the show)

Working on my third Screwdriver of the night.

Robert in his armor dressed up for the kids to enjoy their Halloween. Kids walked around and he passed out candy. He was really enjoying himself. But still, tough to sit down in!

I didn't do a bunch of commissions at this show, but I got to take a pic of one fo the cards I did. The dude just said he wanted a cow. And I could do whatever I wanted. So I made a cow floating in space. Even GRAVITY can't fuck with a cow in space.
