Post-MOTOR CITY CON/report/random blah blah blah.

Well, I'm back from MOTOR CITY CON. Had a great weekend. Thanks to all who attended and got something from me. I gotta say I did better than I expected I would and it turns out this was my most fun (and profitable) show there yet! Here's a day by day reply:

FRIDAY: We leave and arrive there at 11:30. Set up and find out that they changed the layout to that artists don't get backdrops anymore. We're stuck with simple artist alley tables again. but at least I am by all my friends and near the dealers, so maybe traffic will be good... and it was. I sold art and books right away on Friday. Mostly art sales and commission pieces. I did some buying, including 1/2 off tradebooks of BOX OFFICE POISON and BLANKETS (finally I own them and will read them!) and some old STAR TREK mags/books. I run into Jim Johnson and Mike Pascale, who is in town. I chat with everyone I know including Brett, Sean, Jesse Rubenfield, Mike Indovina and others whose name escapes me. We leave and grab Arbys and head to the wife's parents where we B.S. into the night while ordering pizza. Then I pass out around 10:00, dead tired and resting till saturday.

SATURDAY: After a long night, where the wife wasn't too comfy and I slept like a dead log, we get up and head in. I run into my pals Dean and Tommy, former MSPC employees and we catch up a bit. Right away I am treated by sales and commissions galore! Especially from this nice group of 3 kids who made me draw EVERYTHING IN THE WORLD it seems. But man they had great taste. They ended up getting a full PINK FLOYD montage piece from me. Check it out below:

I might add that they were very courteous and thanked me profusely for helping them have a good time at the show. Thanks guys, you ROCK!

After a long day of drawing sketches, selling books and rockin' out, the day finally closed and the wife and I headed to BIG BOY to meet her old high school friend Kristy and my longtime uberfanboy Jesse and his boyfriend Matt. I haven't met Matt in person and it was great to finally do so. They make a cute couple! Very playful, like Kelly and I. Jesse and I chatted and I filled him in on things current and to come, while the girls made up for 7 years of lost time. Also, she filled my wife on some of the inside dope of what will happen when we are in the delivery room! Things to look forward to!

Of course, on saturday I didn't sell any of my Pleasant Hymns tradebooks, but I did find another good use for it:

Yeah, it helps to balance those pesky uneven BIG BOY tables!

So finally after 10pm, we all dissapated and headed home. We got to the in-laws late and I passed out exhausted from a long day and the wife tried to find comfort in a smoke filled house. We didn't even watch FAMILY GUY to fall asleep to.

SUNDAY: We get up, have breakfast and say goodbye to the wife's parents. They were sad we didn't get to see them much during the weekend, but when you are a famous comic book artist (tugs tie, shakes head, rolls eyes), thats life I guess.

We arrive at the show and immediately go to blowing some of the cash I made over the weekend. I tracked down STAR WARS TALES #19, with a Scott Kurtz story in it. Also a 12" Kirk and Picard figure I need for my collection. A Khan and Picard for dirt cheap MIB. Also some art supplies and I get the wife a STAR WARS FAMILY GUY poster as a gift. She gets alot of FAMILY GUY figures MIB and some SIMPSONS and BONE tradebooks. I also go back out and get two of the MEGO STAR TREK reprint figures I keep putting off. I glanced over at Avery Brooks and Walter Koenig, who both are looking good. I run into my pal Robert and his girlfriend Erin, who are doing well.

I sella few books and chat with some friends. I'm counting down the minutes till I can leave and I finally do around 3-4ish. We stop for McDonalds on the way home. Once arriving, we realize after unloading crap-loads of stuff from the car that we got to go back out for Tp, Cat Litter and some Food for the week. So we do and come back and settle our stuff in.

All in all, a great weekend. I was nervous at first about the fact that the artists are back in the armpit of table rows. But turns out I ended up doing quite decently. It was a fun weekend and I did quite well. I was thinking of not doing the Motor City con next year but I think its a safe bet that I will be back to do it. It was a busy weekend and tons to see and talk to. but I think next time, we'll stay in a hotel closer to the con. I love the in-laws, but next year we'll have a baby in tow and its alot to juggle. Also, many thanks to the great SEAN FORNEY for letting me borrow his reference materials when I did some commissions and giving me some advice that I think I will take to heart for sure during my 2009 tour!

Anyway, let me leave you with the BEST PURCHASE I made all weekend. Check this awesome piece out below that I got. Bet you are envious!

Many cheers me droogies! See yeh next year!

Luvs, T
