So watched last night's Battlestar. (spoiler free talk here) Overall, I was pretty happy with it. New things introduced which intrigue me, and some things revealed, equally as intriguing. Lets just say they got me by the balls and I have no idea what is to come next. Hell, even during the show, I didn't know what was coming, literally one minute things are fine. Two seconds later, everything is changed. Crazy. yet, a further demonstration as to why BSG is the best show on TV now. Possibly in the top 5 dramas of all time on TV. If not #1. It is in my book!
I urge you all who haven't jumped into BSG yet to rent the miniseries or first season discs and give it a try. Tell me it doesn't hook you. It actually ANSWERS questions, rather than keeps giving you more.. like LOST does.
So say we all.
In other news, I was watching the news today and saw this:
I saw a crowd gathered and as the train rolled by, the crowds cheered and when the last car passed, we see Obama waving to the crowd. A symbol of the past and a link to the future. I am reminded of my favorite president as a kid, Abe Lincoln who did many such things. Truman's famous train ride comes to mind too.
Say what you want about Obama, I think this sort of symbolism is exactly what we need right now. A reminder of history and the legacy of what it means to be "american." We've been fighting for too long. I guess I got wrapped up in the moment because I actually teared up a bit when I watched this on CNN. Powerful stuff to me.
When I was a kid, I was totally into America, its symbols and Presidents. I watched tons of movies on Washington, Lincoln, Kennedy, etc. I collected things that had Abe Lincoln, Mt. Rushmore, the Statue of Liberty, etc. I was totally into it. These are facts about my past that I had completely forgotten until just now. I guess I had some sort of pride in my country, its history, its symbols, etc. Somewhere along the line, I lost all of that. Probebly in the last 20 years seeing all the back and forth. Losing faith in my country, its people and its pride. I lost my pride in my country.
Thats a sad thing, to say that I live in one of the greatest countries in the world, that I would become so jaded that I would forget my pride.
It has been said that Obama represents a symbol of hope. I 100% agree to that. and not because of his policies and all that. I speak because now, everything is equal. What once was thought unthinkable is now a possibility. We have a black president. To me, that means more than anything. The reason I love shows like STAR TREK is because it shows a future where the former things have passed away. No more disease, hunger or racism. We explore space together in peace. This event in history, shows me that perhaps we are close to that dream. We can pursue that reality. We can "beat our swords into plowshears" so to speak. We as a people can. We have the potential to do it ourselves.
I've heard from some folks in the past few days that "dude, Obama will get shot at when he gets in office. He better watch out." Man, that makes my blood frakin' CURDLE! Just when I think we are far in evolving, we go back a few steps.
Is it possible?
I hope that we are beyond that. I hope for alot of things.
I cannot speak for what Obama will do in office. Actions will speak louder than his words or any symbol of comparison he may be pursuing now. But I hope that everyone on Earth is listening, harder than they ever listened before. I hope we all come together and beat the challenges that now face us: War, economy, education, etc. We need to feel better about ourselves again. TAKE OUR PRIDE BACK! For ourselves.
To me, Obama is a symbol of that. I hope some of you out there can at least share in that, the dream of all of us being one. Indivisible. Liberty, Justice for ALL. Finally, perhaps it has been achieved.
God, I hope so. Don't let me down.
