DIsenchanted with BEST BUY lately....

I am disinchanted with Best Buy right now.

Their people there know NOTHING of the works they sell. You check online to see if your local store says they have something and you go there. Can't find it. they bother you 8 times asking you if you need anything, so u ask if they have such and such cause online it says they have copies in the store. What do they do? They go straight to the website kiosk and re-look it up. Like, I already did that, dopey! It says you have it! But say they do go look it up instead. Like last time I asked them that I Was looking for that NIRVANA LIVE AT READING FESTIVAL DVD. The dude goes up and looks online and just finds NIRVANA CDs. "Is this it?" (Clicks on NEVERMIND the album) I say "No. Its a DVD. Brown cover. the website said you have it already." They keep looking. Then re-type the full title I said in there. I have to spell it for them. Then they find it. And then they say "okay, we got 3 copies in the store." Yeah, I just said that. So, where are they ON THE FLOOR? or in the STOREROOM in the back? So they go to the obvious places where I just was. Under "N" and in the new releases, etc. So then they go ask someone else. And then BOTH of them look in the same places again. then come back saying they don't know. I say "perhaps in the storeroom? Wasn't put out this morning for sale?" They both go back. ten minutes later, um, can't find it. Perhaps maybe you can order it online?

Well, sure, I can order it online...but that would negate the fact that I pre-researched it before I came here and your site said it had THREE COPIES IN THE DAMN STORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

See what I mean? They hire people for the DVD/CD section that know NOTHING about thier products they sell. I swear I Was there once for Beatles CDs. And the dude stops me as I am headed straight for the B section of the CDs. "What you need?" :I'm here for the new Beatles CDs." "Oh" and they go to the kiosk to look them up. I say "Naw, they are right here, under B." And I select what I want and walk past the kiosk where he's long gone helping someone else. And he's typed in "BEETLES." No lie. No lie.

So maybe I am just better off ordering EVERYTHING I want off of Amazon.com. 1-its cheaper. 2-I find exactly what I want and cheaper. 3-No annoying kids that only listen to THE FRAY and KELLY CLARKSON that help me. And every Best Buy stocks a million copies of THE DESCENT or DONT MESS WITH THE ZOHAN and no copies of like ORGAZMO, FRANK ZAPPA, TOM WAITS or EVIL DEAD 2.

And this latest thing of getting rid of the SCI FI and WESTERN sections and mixing it in with Action... (sigh)

So yeah, not a fan of Best Buy anymore.

I can agree with your rant, but you may be over thinking the qualifications for a clerk at Best Buy. As much as you'd like to hope they are fully informed about their areas, I'm betting most of them (not all) are simply "entry level" kids who don't need to do much else but show up. And as far as the "real time inventory" system, I've had various issues with it. Being an I/T guy, I know the challenges of trying to maintain that sort of thing, and it's tough to do. This is probably why places like Wal-Mart don't even try to get specific.

I go to Best Buy for the great prices on new CD releases ($7.99 for new TSO 2-CD set in the opening week!!), and a few other things. I check their weekly sale flyer online each week, for whether I even want to make the effort. But, I don't count on the staff to know much, and I don't expect their website to be correct. In fact, I rarely expect the staff at most stores to know much, and am pleasantly surprised when I do run into the occasional "helpful" employee. If this is the coming standard, it shouldn't be hard to compete for jobs against these brain-dead zombies.

Believe me, I'd LOVE to work at a Best Buy in that section. I'd be good at cross selling too. "oh you like Alice in Chains? Are you aware that Layne the singer had a side project named MAD SEASON with members of Pearl Jam? Its over here.." you know?

Yeah, I get it that its young kids and all that. But still they should try to make some effort to know their products, especially since its a sales based job. You don't have to know every Director and Actor ever, but at least know who the damn BEATLES are! Eh?

But you're right. I should just go there when new releases (that they'd carry anyway) will be there on sale. Or the $4.99 DVD sale they have sometimes. I won't gripe about selection because ALL stores suck at that. Except amazon.com. Word!

Just to add another comment, a good friend at work who is my age (44) posted a "Twitter" note the other day. He also spelled the band "The Beetles" - my point is that it's not just the young kids - even people in my own age group don't take the time to spell the band name correctly!! Although most won't argue the value The Beatles brought, there continues to be more people who aren't interested in a band the broke up 40 years ago.
