That time again. Every year end I do these lists so here we go: (no order)
BEST ALBUMs of 2009-
U2-No Line on the Horizon - A good album, but not as good as the two previous. Take a couple listens to get into.
Pearl Jam-Backspacer - A great, "hooky" album. Their best in years.
Megadeth-Endgame - Exactly what you want. Its damn rockin.
Transatlantic-Whirlwind - The reunion you thought would never happen. Its good, but not their best.
Alice in Chains-Black gives way to blue - I thought I would hate this album, but I gotta say, its damn satisfying. And it addresses everything you want it to right in the first and last songs. Excited for their future, I am.
Patton Oswalt-My weakness is my strong - A good comedy album/dvd combo.
Dream Theater-Black Clouds and Silver Linings - A good release. Not their absolute best though. But its what you want.
Tom Waits-Glitter and Doom Live - A great release!
Star Trek II Wrath of Khan complete score - Released on CD finally, the complete score to the best STAR TREK film of all time. I got this in San Diego Comic Con. Making it a rare disc.
Star Trek Score - Took a bit for this score to grow on me, but it hasn't left my Itunes playlist all year. It takes the notes from the original series theme and plays them in an amalgam and it totally works.
BEST MOVIES OF 2009--
You know, I haven't seen alot of the 2009 releases, as I am always late to the table with everything. And with the kid, I don't get out to the movies as much as I used to. I did see Bruno, Up, Paul Blart, Terminator Salvation and Watchmen on disc and all were hit and miss. I liked Watchmen, but in the end, its sorta not needed. So I only got one movie for this list (for now. I still gotta see District 9 and Zombieland)
STAR TREK! As if you couldn't guess. The movie blew my expectations. I wanted to hate it. But its hard not to fall in love with it. As a hardcore fan, I left completely satisfied and excited for the future of my beloved franchise. I'm glad everyone recieved it as well as I.
TOP 5 WORST EVENTS TO HAPPEN:
1 Milo's death - I had to sit there and watch my cat die and it messed me up hardcore for these past few months. Its a tad easier now, but I miss my buddy. I got a huge 8x10 photo by my desk of him, so its like he's still here while I draw, just like he used to do.
2 Michael Jackson's Death - A total surprise. But it helped me to dust off his old discs and rock all night. Dance until the sunlight.
3 Fired from job - Both a blessing and a shock all at once. While I am happy it went down, there's a twinge of embarrassment because I've never been fired from a job before. but again, it wasn't my fault. It was the fault of a (fill in expletive) boss. but I won out in the end. The wife got promoted, I got unemployment and a decent one day a week job. So EPIC FAIL Lions Den. I win.
4 Robert Ginty RIP - Hardly anyone noticed the great one's passing. He rocked. The wife immediately bought me his autograph on ebay that day. Awesome wife!
5 Epic Fail on diets - I cannot tell you how many diets I started this year and stopped each one. But I've ballooned up this year even more than ever, so now its a necessity or I will die. Drinking a diet soda as I type this. No shit.
TOP 10 BEST EVENTS TO HAPPEN:
1 Scott turns 1 - Watching him grow this past year as been one hell of an experience.
2 Cody wins Baseball championship - His team got #1 in placement for the year. Two huge trophies for him. I'm soooooo glad he likes it and will stay off the couch. Maybe he won't grow up fat like I did.
3 Wife and I's 6 year anniversary - SIX YEARS! Hard to believe. It seems like yesterday, and yet it seems like forever. but it never has lost its luster or shine. Without her, I would be utter shit. I love ya boo.
4 SAN DIEGO COMIC CON! - For the first time ever, I got on a plane and flew. For the first time, I went to California. And for the last 5 years while working on comics, I kept promising myself that I would go. And I did. It was a shitload of money, but totally worth it. I made good contacts, got some good feedback on my work and got my head focused on what I need to do for the next step in my work. I also got the experience of working the booth with the Antarctic Press guys, which was deeply fun. I walked the floor and saw all the cool shit. Sitting at the bar at the Hyatt and Uhura sits down and drinks and chats with us. Hanging with Brian, Lee, Grant, Jim & Mike, my first hardrock cafe.. it was just a super sweet time. I so badly want to go back again. Not next year, but 2011 for sure. I'll forgo all else. thanks to Brian and Lee for making the trip happen. and MILLIONS of thanks to the wife for allowing it happen. It was a dream come true.
5 HEROES CON - Again, first time there. The long drive to North Carolina with Tim was a great time, although extremely long! But we had great talks. Meeting all the podcast people in person for the first time, hanging with Anthony and Tim, the art auction, hell, all of it. I had such a great time that I 100% WILL be back there next year.
6 PLEASANT LIFE FINAL BOOK RELEASE - A story that took 7 years to tell, finally ended. I released my last tradebook this past year and the response has been extremely positive. While I felt the push to evolve my work to the next level, I kept it looking the same in the book so that once put all together with the other books, it would match. I made the right decision to end the story and was rewarded with everyone that got it enjoying the hell out of it.
7 PITTSBURGH CON - Driving there with my pal Dean, the new con center, hell, all of it, made my third year at Pittsburgh Con a great one. I will be back again.
8 BEATLES RE-RELEASES - I'll tell you, that was my day. I went into best buy and scored 4 of thier Cds right away. And the sound and packaging are unmatched. Well worth the wait!
9 BLURAY - I love it when I actually catch up with technology. We scored a BR player and it makes my movies look orgasmic!
10 THE TRIP TO ILLINOIS - At first I was hesitant to go. I wanted to see my parents, but the long drive with a one year old left me worried. But I am so glad we went. Scott couldn't have acted better for the drive and I really enjoyed the hell out of it. I got to start a movie projector for the first time in over 8 years and it felt good to feel all those old memories rushing back. I got taken up in all of it and wanted to do more. It was an awesome to feel that way again. I hope its not the last time.
Okay, part two coming up. We'll count down the BEST OF THE DECADE!!!!!!!
