Something I haven't talked a whole lot about, but we've got a new STAR WARS movie only 16 days away. I don't have any tickets ordered yet but I am sure I will see it the first week. Hard to make plans around a job where schedules can change and increase. Not a bad thing though!
I'm super excited for the flick because its got everything going for it. Practical sets and effects, Kasdan is back as a writer, JJ Abrams is greatness and they are keeping the magic of the first movies alive. We'll finally get to see what happened to our old friends from 40 years ago, for real! We've read and dreamed up possibilities for 40 years and now its time to really find out.
I already know a lot and that really doesn't spoil anything for me. I am going into this with the same deal of excitement as if I knew nothing at all. It also feels special because I get to take part in a very small, small, small, small, small aspect of Star Wars in doing the sketch cards for Topps. Its been a privilege drawing these characters for the last couple years on almost 10 different sets. They've trusted me with autograph cards, medallion and wood cards, and cards with pieces of props in them! Its been an honor. And I hope that work continues. Because now I will have a whole bunch of new characters and new looks on familiar faces to portray in the cards. It really has opened up a lot for me professionally, and I appreciate it. I get emails from people all over the USA saying they collect my cards and its mind blowing to me that my take on these characters is appreciated by anyone. Thank you.
While I mainly focus on working on just my characters and their stories, its always great to take time out and spend time in a galaxy far far away.
Most know me as a hardcore Trek guy. But Star Wars will always forever be tied into my childhood. I still have my action figures that I had when I was a kid. The actual ones. Not re-buys. They are prized possessions of mine. Now I get to watch my kids play with them. Its pure magic.
Star Wars is magic. And I am tired of the last 20 years of naysaying the special editions and prequels. Its been done to death now and I am just ready for the next chapter. We're passing the torch to the next generation and it feels great. But I have a feeling that when I leave the theater in less than 20 days, I will be feeling like I'm back in time.
Enjoy this time, my fellow nerds. We're getting everything we ever wanted. Don't rant. Don't bitch. Just enjoy it.
Cause the force is strong with us.
