I'm a HARDCORE Superman fan. As a kid, I never read the comics, but I loved the movies. I watched the hell out of the first two for sure. I actually even like SUPERMAN IV: THE QUEST FOR PEACE. I am a Superman nut. The reason I started reading comics in the early 90's was the Death of Superman stuff. I had to see what they were doing to my big blue boy scout. Then later they started re-running the old George Reeves Superman Show on Nick at Nite. I just loved it all.
SUPERMAN RETURNS was cool for nostalgia but really a very very flawed movie. All I could think about was how much Brandon Routh looked like Chris Reeve (he did a good job of it BTW). To me, Christopher Reeve will always be Superman. Nothing else compares. So when I heard they were doing yet another movie, my initial reaction was, "I don't need it."
Now I don't want to be negative and naysay something that doesn't even exist yet. I have hopes that Snyder delivers us a cool movie. Nothing would make me happier than for a new generation to find Superman "cool" again. I'm afraid I will be stuck in the late 70's early 80's. Cannot see past Chris Reeve. Perhaps I never will. I'm 33 years old. He was my Superman. Just like the generation before me had George Reeves and Kirk Allyn. It scares me with these reboots I guess. Like part of them are cool and I can totally dig it, but its not MY movie era anymore. Another sign I am growing older? Scary!!
For me, and I said this on the twitter that in order for this movie to succeed, it will need a KILLER fucking score. And its hard to top that John Williams score. Its my favorite score of his and possibly tops of all my favorite scores. Its just fucking good. So if Snyder gets a good score, lots of action, keeps the CORE of what makes Superman, SUPERMAN, and lays low on the slow motion stuff he always does in his movies, then I say this movie has a great chance. The costume here shown, while cool, still has that modern "scales" look to me and that kinda bums me out. The Logo on the chest is better than Singer's Superman by far! But still a tad wonky. Not to nitpick it or anything. Sorry. You think too much about this stuff and then you start sounding like an AICN talkbacker. I think it really woulda been cool to do a Superman movie set in the 40-50's. Do homage shots from the old comics and TV shows. Make it a really cool outlandish retro Superman with red/blue Kryptonite! I digress.
Bottom line: I'm not SUPER for it, but I wish it best of luck. I'll 99% be there on opening day to see it. Superman is my favorite character in comics. It'll be great to see what others can do with it. Cause I still got MY version. On Bluray. The best superhero movie ever made. My opinion, natch. But its the only opinion I 100% trust. Maybe. I don't know. I spout a lot of BS sometimes.....
In other news, I saw they are releasing a 20th Anniversary box set of Nirvana's NEVERMIND. I could do a novel on what Nirvana and the music of that era means to me. Maybe soon I will. I am of that era for sure. (Lithium on Sirius radio baby! Best station ever!!!!!) I'm excited for this box set. Anything Nirvana related I am always excited for. I wish they were still around, I sure could use them right now. Still, I'm excited for this set. But the ultimate will be if they do one for IN UTERO. My favorite Nirvana album and an album that resides in my top ten personal favorite albums of all time. Sometimes, its cool to get older. :)
