Was reading an interview with Terry Moore right HERE. I found this statement interesting: " I don't want to make another series that suffers from my usual low
orders in the comic book direct market. It's crazy for me to keep making
mainstream fiction and then release it only in stores catering to
Marvel-DC iconography."
Sounds like a dig. And maybe it is. But what comics do... well, it is what it is. I remember starting out people were telling me I should submit to Diamond. But something told me not to. I knew it was the wrong way to go about it. And turns out I was right as a couple years later they changed the minimum orders to around 3,000 units per book! And there was not much profit in the idea anyway. Sure, I'd reach more of an audience, but I figured I'd go the other way. I'd take the book out directly myself and promote it myself. It would certainly be harder and take longer. And maybe not even work. But the benefits are far more endless to me with this method. #1, you keep your profit 100%. No middle man. #2, you get a more personal touch with fans and potential fans. Like today, someone bought one of my novels online and I did a free sketch inside the book, signed it and tossed in some freebie stuff in their package as a thank you for ordering from me! You cannot get that from the Direct Market. #3, you get to talk to people about your work and get them excited about it. You don't have to sell it on one image. You show and tell them why its cool in person and make them a believer. And the sale means a hell of a lot more to you when you do it that way, believe me.
I am not knocking the Direct Market method. It totally works for some. But for me, it doesn't. I prefer my method. Taking it to the people in person and being completely accessible online for purchases and interaction. Cannot see me at a comic show? I got a table constantly set up at this online comic convention.... the internet comic con! It never ends and I am never away from my table. All you got to do is click on the links to the right of what you are reading now and read about my books and order them! That easy. And you get a free sketch, freebies sent directly to you from me. Completely personal touch and I love it!
I appreciate all who have and will support my work over the years. And its getting bigger and better by the day! Thanks for giving me a great life! And if you haven't read my books, give a look at the links to the right and check em out! I've been doing this for 18 years and I am never stopping. I'm always gonna be here folks. Even after I'm gone. The books will remain in print. You can read em. Oh yes!
So Direct Market? Not for me. I prefer the DIRECT FROM ADAM MARKET!!!! Word!
