Today is the last day for my Kickstarter for STARSLAM RETURNS! I'm pretty happy that I see so many repeat fans coming back and so many new faces too! It truly means a lot to me. STARSLAM RETURNS ON KICKSTARTER

Beyond that its been the usual business in my life. Both my youngest boys had birthdays in the last couple weeks. Scott turned 11, James turned 7. We had lots of presents, cake and more fun times as always.

I've been busy with commissions and I just signed up for another card set through Dynamite. One that will be a lot of fun and a bit of a departure for me. I recently sold the majority of my leftover KISS cards from my artist proofs from the Dynamite set. I still have a couple left, as well as a few BETTIE PAGE, VAMPIRELLA and WOMEN OF COSPLAY cards available. In addition to all of this, I will be at FANTASTICON in my old hometown of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan coming up in October. I can think of no better place to celebrate my 25 years in self publishing comics than in the town where it all started! I hope to see lots of old friends and make new ones. I will be taking pre-commission sales for people to pick up at the show. I'll make an announcement and give details about that soon. Probably next week. So stay tuned. Plan to come out and party with me in October at FANTASTICON! I don't do many shows anymore so this is a grand opportunity. Let's party!!

I haven't had much time or spare scratch to get many new music or movies so I have been watching some stuff that has accumulated in the house. I recently watched YOR: HUNTER FROM THE FUTURE (which was some cheesy fun) and MILES AHEAD (the Don Cheadle acted and directed flick about Miles Davis. Awesome!) - Also of course I got the new TOOL album... scalpers be damned, I got it on release day for cost! Fuck you!! And its good, as one would expect. It will take some time to dissect as all TOOL albums do, so bare with me as I do that. I'm adding it to the "will listen deeply and dissect" pile.

TOOL Concert review

Hey friends!

So I finally saw TOOL for the first time in my life and it was a killer show. How could it not be, right? The opening band wasn't that good, but the show TOOL put on more than made up for it. The drinks were way overpriced, which is to be expected. But all in all, we had a good time. Pics speak louder than words, don't you think?

I always try to get a ticket for the souvenir book. I have almost 30 now I think.

D got all dressed up. She NEVER lets me take a picture of her without her doing something goofy, so this is as best as I could get. Still, she looked very pretty. Had to document that.

We decided to go to Clarkston early and try this BBQ place called "Union Woodshop." D reports that they have the best potato salad and baked mac n' cheese. My plate consisted of more unhealthy choices and pulled pork! But I ended up taking half of it home. Very delicious!

There were signs all around and the security was VERY adamant that there was no video or photos allowed in the venue. Therefore, I didn't chance taking any pics of audio of my own. I didn't want to get kicked out. I'm not much of a rule breaker. Besides: My iphone camera usually turns out shitty pics anyway. So here are a few shots that others took and uploaded of the show:

The highlight for me was seeing (but mostly hearing due to an obstructed view) Danny's drum solo after the intermission. He is one of my top five favorite modern drummers. I cannot find video online of the solo yet, but I'm sure some will pop up.

I did find this video of their closing song: STINKFIST and at the end of the show, Danny comes out wearing a Pistons jersey. And then Adam Jones brings out his little kid and waves to the audience. It was a rare sight to see anything slighty "human" from that band! Here's the video:



As far as anything political said, here's what Maynard had to say:

All in all, it was a good time and I'm glad I finally got to see them. Next time I think I will bring my own alcohol in instead of paying $20 for two shot glasses full of frozen daqueri. I think we paid mostly for the big straws that came with it. But anyway, here's hoping there's a new TOOL album soon and we can relive it all again.

I appreciate all the love and support I have got throughout the years and as I kick this car into gear and head for the finishing line in the comics' world, I hope you will help me see this journey to the end and what lies beyond. There is so much to come.

Last night the art gods blessed me with seven new pages and my hand stayed strong throughout! I'm very happy about that. I'm scanning them up today and getting them ready to go. I'm striving hard to push this first erotica book out the door now that I am past the halfway point on Starslam 3. So expect a Kickstarter to begin something later this summer. Starslam 3's Kickstarter will be the fall or early winter I think, if all goes well. And there is a third book of sorts of my art coming from someone else. All exciting things! So much to do...

After last blog's confession I've been getting messages of encouragement and advice and I appreciate all of it. The numbers are shocking, I know. But it certainly isn't a death sentence in my view. Many have beat this demon and I will be no different. I've already begun to do so.

The Beatles SGT PEPPERS came out 50 years ago today. I remember when I first heard that album and how it seemed that all music had changed for me. I realized all the doors that album opened in my listening experience and how it gave birth to progressive rock... a genre many of my favorite bands live in. All beginning right there. Happy birthday, Sgt. Peppers. Long live the memories! 

Tomorrow a new ROGER WATERS album comes out. His first since 1992!!! I'm sure a lot of it is about the current political climate and I cannot wait to dig into it. I'll give a full review soon. 

My girl and I went to the movies the other day and saw SNATCHED. The new Amy Schumer/Goldie Hawn movie. While not the next CITIZEN KANE, I laughed in a few parts. Its worth a watch as a dumb comedy. Go enjoy it. 

 

Next week I'm seeing TOOL live here in Michigan! I'm beyond excited to finally get to see them. Expect pics and a full report... if not some audio/video from the show. Oh yes. 

I suppose that is it. I will get with you all next week sometime about all the progress that has been going on all the things cooking on my stove. Maybe even some progress art pics! We'll see... if you are good!

Post-Thanksgiving Blah Blah...

Hey all! Had a good holiday this week. My in-laws came up and ate my cooking for the first time. I made a massive 23 lb turkey, taters, chicken dumplings, corn and biscuits. I could tell they were hesitant at first to try my food but grandpa went up for seconds and grandma finished her whole plate. I think I finally won them over! But it was a good day. I watched the Lions kick the shit out of the Packers, which is always satisfying. We also put our Xmas tree up:

We didn't go out on black friday because money was tight this week. I usually think I can sneak out sometime the night of and get cheap blu-rays but then come home in anger due to rudeness and the lines. But the wife worked and I didn't want to drag the kids out into the cold. Besides, we broke anyway till payday. I got a few freelance and commission people that owe me money and have owed me money for some time now. So I am gonna start squeezing on some of them so that they pay up. I got bills to pay and this shit aint funny. But thats the life of a freelancer I suppose.

In other news, I've tried to stay busy when I can. I wrote a few more pages on my PORN STORE STORIES book. I'm about 30 more pages away from a complete first draft and then I'll work on editing it. I'm leaning towards just sticking with self publishing it, but I am not sure. I'd kind of like to work with another publisher for once and see what sales they can give the book. Its hard to run it all yourself. Would be nice to have someone else step in.

I am also working on art for the TALES OF SEQUENTIAL MAYHEM #3 book:

The art for it is not due till January and its only a quick 8 page story on my end, plus a bit of supplementary material. But I just want it done and out of my way for the big things coming. I got a mini series I was hired to do for a company revolving around a massively popular and historic fictional character and I am starting on that this week. So for now I have been putting out the little fires around me to clear the way for that. I want it to be my best work thus far. If the above is any indication of the direction I am going, then I feel like I am on the right path. I'm trying really hard to pack my panels and not bullshit my backgrounds.

Record Store Day was yesterday as well, and here I am, broke. Some nice vinyl came out too. I'm trying not to think about what I missed out on. Too depressing. But when the money rolls in, I will start buying presents for the family and myself what I really want: VINYL! I got a bunch last payday. Mostly used stuff from Rush, Van Halen, Ratt, UFO and others. But I also scored new sealed copies of NIN's "Pretty Hate Machine" and Tool's "Opiate." So I'm on my way to building my collection back. I got a massive list of albums I want and I am combing ebay, record stores and other sources for them. When the cash hits me, I will load up. And I'll be ready when santa wife gets me the record player I asked for.

Sketch card work has sort of slowed for me. I got two sets on my plate right now. Both of them are pinup girlie related. I think that is fine for me. I dipped my toe into all these cool properties and I had my fun with them. I haven't sent out new samples in a while. Some companies are great to work with, others... not so much. But overall it has been a good experience and it got me some street cred for a while. But I am happy to be on my own again for the most part and free to do my shit. Thats not to say that if I were asked and the right set came along that I might not consider it, cause I might. But I certainly am not looking as much as I once did. But sketch cards have been very very good to me!

And I emailed the folks who pre-ordered the artbook the news, but I have got a quote from the printer and the book will be headed there this next month. I am hoping it have it in time for xmas. Just waiting on a wee bit more cash to cover my overhead and personal copies, cause there is a minimum over the ones that were pre-ordered that I had to place. I've been pretty quiet on FACEBOOK for a few weeks now and I gotta say that I am loving it. I have less bullcrap in my head and thats always a good thing. I don't feel like I have to reach out as much as I did before. I can do that right here or on my podcast. There's no fighting and no drama. I love it. I go on there about once a day and check out the few people I do pay attention to in my feed. And I only post links to my stuff. Call me a spammer, but thats all I want to say there. Everything else I say via this blog, podcast and my TWITTER account. So plenty of outlets to say what I want to say, and they are more controllable. Making the break from Facebook: Best decision ever. 

Lastly, for the adult webcomics people, STARSLAM (adults only) is nearing the end of the third chapter. The fourth is coming up. BIG things are going to be happening. Things will be revealed. Blood will be spilled. Thats all I'm saying. You won't want to miss it! So if you are over 18 and enjoy sexy stories, give it a read, please. Updates every Monday.
