RIP Professor. Neil Peart

Im sitting at work sad as fuck. Neil Peart is gone.

My two closest friends texted me within five minutes when the news broke. Dean, who has been a lifelong Rush fan hit me with the news first. We saw Rush together on their last tour in 2015. A couple minutes later Shane, my lifelong brother in life and music, texted me the news. They both knew how I would feel. They both share a deep love of music with me and an even deeper understanding of what this loss means.

Neil Peart wasn’t just a rock drummer. He is probably considered to be the greatest drummer who ever picked up the sticks. That is a debate, considering your own preference and musical interests. But any rock musician would put him in the top of their lists of influence. His methods, perfection and skill is absolutely beyond estimation. But Neil wrote all the Rush lyrics. So those words, were influenced by all sorts of fantasy and literature, who did comparisons with history and the psyche. All of it was from him. And the lyrics had substance. It went beyond just kicking ass and chasing chicks. Its not common in rock radio to be talking about integrity and honesty in a radio hit (Spirit of the Radio). Or even breaking down a love of a motor car (Red Barchetta). Or using history as a parable for a futuristic story about humans enslaves by aliens, inspired by German concentration camps that his bandmate’s family endured (Red Sector A). Or fuck, the granddaddy of them all: rebuttal of a totalitarian society who controlled and subdued creativity per potential rebellion, and it was a comment on their current state in their industry as artists (2112).

The examples go on and on. For me, i connected with lyrics about just wanting to be the cool kid in school, when I wasn’t (Subdivisions). And knowing you have to work hard to make your dreams come true (Something for Nothing). But today, i’m thinking about Neil, his life and the life of those whom I hold dear in my life and whom I share a love of music with. Its a garden to nurture and protect (The Garden).

Im sitting at work, devastated. Ive cried a lot today. Im sitting in silence. I want to turn on some Rush from my phone, but I don’t even know where to start. I’m not sure I can right now. I know it would turn me into a blubbering mess. Its yet another thing that changes for me as I grow older. You love a musician or an actor or an artist. They die, then you come back to the work and see it in a different way. Sad that its the end and you now have a complete body of their work, knowing nothing else will come from them. Amazed and sad at their work and performance, because it means so much to you. You use their art to define you and who you are. Like when I watch Star Trek now, I cry. Because I love those folks and miss them. He same it shall be now for Rush. I won’t hear it the same way again.

But most of all, I am grateful to have lived during the lifetime of those whose work spoke to me. Im grateful they gave me their art and grateful for who they were. Neil was a great man. A monster musician. A monster writer. And a humble, quiet, peaceful person. He endured the sudden loss of his daughter to a car accident, the loss of his wife to cancer and found happiness in continuing. He leaves behind a daughter who will have to find her own way now to cope without him. And he was so humble that even when he is considered the greatest, he cared enough about his craft that he re-learned how to play with teacher Fred Gruber. He changed his style and made himself better, without ego. That shows how much he cared and wanted to continue to grow and learn. He didn’t crave the attention or the limelight, in fact he ran out of the stadium after the last cymbal crash  to avoid it. He came,  he played and he gave it all to us. The best. The greatest. And he showed us how to be a great person.

This loss is incalcuable. For me on a personal level, it is devastating. I will not be the same again. RIP Maestro. The Professor. Thank you, beyond words.

“The treasure of a life is a measure of love and respect.
The way you live, the gifts that you give.
The measure of a life is a measure of love and respect.
So hard to earn, so easily burned.
In the fullness of time,
A garden to nurture and protect.”

—The Garden. RUSH off of CLOCKWORK ANGELS. Lyrics by Neil Peart. RIP

25 Years Ago This Week... MY Woodstock Happened.

Lots of folks this week are celebrating the 50th Anniversary of WOODSTOCK that happened in Bethel, NY. For me, I am looking back fondly at my Woodstock... Woodstock 1994, that happened twenty-five years ago tonight as I type this.

I was a smidge too young to have been able to go. I was only 16. But I wanted to be there so bad! The lineup included bands I was way into even back then. Like Nine Inch Nails, Collective Soul, Rollins Band, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Greem Day, Primus, Metallica, Peter Gabriel and so many more. I was upset I wasn't able to go. At 16 I had just got my driver's license. For me to venture 20 miles out of town to visit a mall in Midland, Michigan was a major journey. There was no way I could drive from Michigan to Saugerties, NY for such an event.

However, I feel like I was "there" in a sense. I had taken the weekend off of work at McDonalds and I stayed peeled to MTV all weekend watching the coverage and footage. You couldn't see too much of the performances, as they were selling that as a PAY PER VIEW feed at the time. But later on I saw bootlegs of a lot of the performances. And I think most of them are readily available on youtube if you do a simple search. I watched well into the night every night and wished I was there. It really had an impact on me for some reason. I felt like it was a cultural thing I just had to take note of and be a part of.

Shortly after that weekend, they released a VHS and double CD of one song each from the major performers. I watched and listened to it over and over. I STILL have that double CD. No joke. Recently I missed out on an exclusive Record Store Day vinyl of Green Day's entire set from the show. I'll get it someday.

You can tell I was obsessed with it because in the comics I drew at the time, I drew a couple WOODSTOCK posters in the backgrounds and on t-shirts. So yeah, I was there... in a sense. Sorta. Kinda. Shut up. ;)

I wasn't into the lineup of bands that played at WOODSTOCK 99... and we all know the story of what happened there. I'm glad I did not go to that event. But I had hoped that for this year, the 50th/25th of Woodstock that they would announce a big show and the lineup would be killer. They did announce a show, but in my opinion, the lineup was total ass. I was very disappointed. Apparently so was everyone else because ticket sales just weren't there. So investors pulled out. They tried to save it, move it, but it wasn't happening. A couple weeks ago it was officially cancelled. Its a pity, but I completely get why.

Something happened in 1969 and even in 1994. Stuff that you cannot recreate. I remember Peter Gabriel saying at the show, "Twenty-five years ago, they believed you could change the world. To live their dreams. This is YOUR Woodstock. These are YOUR dreams." That line always stuck with me.

Well here I am, 25 years later. I'm a middle aged man. I still listen to those same bands and I have evolved myself as a person and my ideas in how I view the world. Some of my dreams have come true. Some didn't. But its been a hell of a ride. Sometimes the world seems darker than ever, especially when compared to 1994. But we strive on. We rock on. We live on. Forever young at heart.

This week I think I will dust off some of those CDs and relive the magic of that year and time. I will remember where I was mentally and how far I have come. Music is the best time travel machine there ever was. Because when I push play I am taken back again. Back where I belonged.

Peace.

NERDINESS ABOUNDS

Hello friends! Welcome to November!

Hoping to get a few months ahead on things like my PATREON so I can be free a bit. I might "take a break" from artworking the month of December (Although who am I kidding? I never quit!) But I got some exciting shit to do and have fun with lately.
Exciting time to be a nerd. Not only do we get tons of cool movies and TV shows, we get lots of toys and games as well. Things I am excited for are things like CREED 2 (dropping Thanksgiving), the long awaited delivery of my new FIREBALL ISLAND board game (Backed on Kickstarter in April and its finally shipping this month!). This week I got a couple new nerdy things too:

My fiancee bought be this as a "wedding present." I didn't even know I got one!! The wedding is a few months away but I guess since it dropped now and its hard to find, she went ahead and scored one for me:

I've always wanted a stand up arcade cabinet in my home, and now I got one! The reviews on these things are mostly positive and I look forward to assembling it this weekend with my boys. I gotta figure out where I am going to put it, but I will find a place! GALAGA is my favorite arcade game of all time. That and the VECTOR STAR WARS game. I'll assemble it and let you know how it is.

For music nerds, I got my METALLICA: AND JUSTICE FOR ALL box set shipped early!

Man there is a shitload to listen to there! But I'll get to what people want to know...

The main criticism about this album is that the bass is waaaaaaaaaay down in the mix. So does this "Remaster" fix that? In short, no. I knew it wouldn't. But I was excited about the "Rough Mixes from the Vault" disc. Maybe that would be a version with bass in it! In short, no. Well, maybe... I did a comparison of my old 1988 CD version, the new REMASTER version and the ROUGH MIXES version... I can say of the three, the ROUGH MIXES sounds the best to me. Its "warmer" and louder. Plus a few parts here and there are different. Different riff or solo, etc. Vocals sound the same on all three. The REMASTER does sound a tad louder. The album hasn't sounded better. But I listened closely to "Blackened" on all three versions, going back and forth from all three and I didn't hear any discernible bass track. Unless Jason played it right on the nuggets of the rhythm guitar. But I certainly would try to track down the Rough Mixes version. Interesting bit of history.

I still got all the demos, live tracks to go through. There's a ton here. And the book is worth the price alone! If you are a fan, take the jump and get the box set. You'll thank me. Don't let the bass stuff ruin the greatness of what is a great album. Arguably Metallica's best. IMO. But a case could be made for any of the first 5 albums with them.

In other nerd news, I bought and read comedian Brian Posehn's new book "FOREVER NERDY." It was a quick read, him showcasing all the stuff he loves, how he discovered it and all the bullying he endured as a kid. I felt like I got to know him a little better. I met him once briefly and he was nice but very quiet. Still one of my favorite comedians working today. If you like nerdy talk about how you discovered things like heavy metal, Star Wars, girls, etc... check out his book: FOREVER NERDY.

For some reason I have been into reading and listening to D&D stuff. Especially podcasts. I got turned on to Brian Posehn's "NERD POKER" Podcast. Its kind of fun to sit and listen to them play a D&D campaign. Made me want to play myself.

I never played growing up. The closest I came to playing as a kid was playing HEROQUEST: THE BOARD GAME (Which I will score one on ebay soon, dammit!). I played the real thing a handful of times in college with my friend Jon and that was fun. So maybe in total I've played it six times. Last time I played was an attempt to start a new campaign with Jon back in like 2011. I'm not super into doing it. I never have time. Stupid second shift work! If I worked first shift at my job, I might consider it. I'm too inconsistent to get anything going. Plus a lot of my friends live far away. Maybe skype a session? I dunno. Not as fun. So I just enjoy the NERD POKER podcast and read copies of DORK TOWER meanwhile. Maybe someday I will do something with my passing interest in it. I've often thought about creating a mini campaign around STARSLAM and making a fun, sexy role playing game for fans of the series. Maybe I will someday. Would be a fun bonus wouldn't it?

Another thing I liked as a kid was reading DRAGONLANCE books. I read the very first one but never got into the others. I should. I was big into LORD OF THE RINGS when the movies came out. But the novels aren't the funnest read. So I guess my nerdiness is limited. Although I do love Mid-evil RPG video games... Just never have fucking time to play them!

So this weekend: Kids all weekend. Assemble my Galaga game. Dive deeper into my Metallica box set and get caught up on artworking. I want to get far ahead on the patreon stuff, finish a commission and finish the KISS cards. I also have to finish digging through my collection for the upcoming toy sale in Lansing on Nov 11th. Selling my shit! Buying new shit!

Lots to do. Let's get to it!

Weekend Recording

Hey friends! I'm back home from a couple days in Midland recording music and hanging out with my oldest friend (and IDIOTHEAD bandmate) Shane Logan. It has been almost 11 years since we recorded music together and about 6 years since we hung out together. Finally we got a spare couple days off and we make it happen. We did skit tapes, shopped for retro games and played VR and PS4 games. Then we also recorded two songs. One is a remake of an old old old song of ours, another was a brand new one. Not sure what will be done with them beyond appearances on the podcast or if they will appear on a new album yet, but you never know! We plan to get together again this summer for another session.

All in all it was quite enjoyable for me to get away from it all and reconnect with my past a bit. Plus collaborate with one of the only people on this planet who can literally read my mind. It is comforting to know that no matter how much older one gets, or how much has changed and new responsibilities have been taken on, that at the core we can still be our old selves. Very refreshing weekend of fun and creativity!

I'll let the pics do the talking now. Its back to the grind for me. I got a ton of things to do all this week and for the next few weeks as well. See you folks soon!

Recording some audio skit comedy.

Lego room panorama

Shane's boy Evan is really creative! He made this arcade cabinet. I did something very similar when I was his age.

Holy Crap!!!

Where the magic happens.

Sometimes I try the drums too.... badly.

Sight reading some Beatles while we jam.

Recording a guitar track for our song.

Two old men making new offensive music. Wouldn't have it any other way.

Cheers, T

How I Spent My New Years

Hello friends!

Well, we've made it. We're on the other side to good ol' 2017. Where it will be all safe,no good celebrity deaths and filled with cotton candy kisses, chocolate rainbows and fluffy kittens, right? Lets hope so!

For me, I didn't have that eventful of a New Years' Eve. We had planned to go out but I ended up having to get the kids early the next day, so I just stayed at home and drank...

Jager and always a chaser. Nice!

The week before I did a nice round of overtime, but I did find some time to do some post Xmas shopping with my lottery wins....

I'll tell you, I'm not a fan of these POP figures but I saw this and I had to have it. People are saying its my gateway drug but I swear this probably will be my only one...... probably.

I got a nice stack of CDs from Replay and FBC in Lansing. Most of these I already own digitally, but I want a physical copy for my new shelf...
I used to have a shelf like this but I parted ways with it when I got rid of my CDs a few years ago. Since then I have grabbed new CDs/music DVDs here and there and haven't had a place to put them... until NOW! But man there's a lot of room for more. I guess I am going to have to go out and grab some more essentials!

My girl enjoying her Xmas present of a Sega Genesis! We also did some Wii Bowling and Harry Potter Lego.
Now that we've crossed the great barrier into the safe zone (being facetious there), its time to get into some new habits. I have started to eat and live healthier. Its going to be a very slow process and no hardcore crash diets type of thing. Its little changes, gradual changes and keeping things rolling. I'm also doing a lot of meditating and reading, as well as other things. I'm taking care of me. That's the important thing.

I am also busy on actual artworking! I'm working hard to get this horror comic/Caleb tribute book out the door. Only about 3-4 pages left to do for it plus a cover. I've given myself until end of this month to finish it but truthfully, I could have it done in a week if I wanted to. Expect a Kickstarter or something for it soon! After this book is done, its full speed ahead on Starslam 3. I did some new Pleasant Life 2 pages last week as well and who knows what else is lurking and not being talked about as much!

I also took some time this week to do some filming for the new VLOG channel! We went a few places and I shot stuff and shot lots of stuff at home to add to what I already got in the can. I got enough material now for about 4-5 Vlogs to start out with. I will launch Vlog #1 this month after I get some small shots done that I need for it. I really am enjoying the creativity of the project. Its part documentary, part home movies, part walkthrough, part comedy... I got this overall arch that I want to do over the course of this year and have planned out "episodes" of it already to wrap around things that are going to come up.

One of my main goals this year is to gather a rhythm for getting things done. I know there are obligations like family and day job that will derail some of this sometimes, but for the most part I am committed to just getting my shit done. And I am not compromising my time or attention to do it. If I have to wall myself up and give out a lot of "No's" to make it happen, so be it. I feel bad but I got commitments to answer to. Mainly to you fine folks! A promise is a promise, so let's get it done!

Anyway, enough treading water. Time to get on it! I hope you had a safe and happy new year. Let's go grab 2017 by the nuts and make it our bitch!

Cheers, T

Pre-Holiday Thoughts

Hey friends!

My commission sale drive continues until next week Thanksgiving! Details HERE - We've already raised an additional $250 for the Arlee Rodgers fund for her surgery and I appreciate it. Let's keep it going!

Arlee's family is on my mind this weekend. This weekend is the Days of the Dead con in Chicago. Last year this time, Arlee's dad Joe, myself, Caleb and his wife Colleen drove through the two day blizzard to get to the show for one night only. It was scary as hell but we made it. I had a great time at the show itself. You can see pics and a recap right HERE - We got drunk off our ass, danced and partied. I met some new celebs and bought some cool shit. But it was my first horror con and I was loving every second we were there. This year Joe, his wife and Colleen are going. I wish I could but I have my kids this weekend and no days off left in which to head out there as well. I wanted to go out if only to toast to my friend Caleb and celebrate his life with my friends, his friends and family. I called for a rain check on that event until March Horrorhound in Cincinnati. Still, I wish I could have gone. I've been thinking about the trip from last year a lot and how much fun it was, despite the scary snow drive. I hope to make it to many more horror shows and bring Caleb's spirit with us every time we go. I guess that makes these things even more special than they were before. So that's a good thing. I certainly will never forget that weekend last year... or him.

This weekend I have my boys and next week is Thanksgiving! We've already bought our turkey and have made plans on what we are going to do. I'll have the boys for three hours that day and a friend might be joining us. Other than that, I plan to just take it easy for a couple days. I REALLY need to relax and have some quiet time. I never get to do that and I desperately need it. We got some things to do on Saturday that will be fun, other than that, I am just going to focus on the therapy I need of relaxing. I might get productive on some artwork, but I'm not promising myself anything other than some much needed rest/relaxation... whatever form that takes.

I plotted out some new pages for Starslam 3 and scanned a bunch of new things for the Patreon.. whenever that is going to launch. I might do some inking on the pages this weekend if the kids let me. We shall see.

I'm addicted to the new Neal Morse album, THE SIMILITUDE OF A DREAM. It might dethrone Anthrax's FOR ALL KINGS as my album of the year. Its a big musical journey, for sure. Ranks up there with some of his best. You can check out the album yourself on Itunes or order it through his website HERE - If you like prog rock, stuff like early Genesis, Yes, Floyd and other stuff, you'll certainly dig this.

I wrote a song at work the other night. Some great lyrics that I need to hone down and put music to. I know early on this year I got a new bass and wanted to do some recording. Those plans never happened. But I still desire to get something going with it. Perhaps after the holidays and I get a couple of these comic/book projects out the door, I might focus some creative energy that way. I'd like to. I got a ton of good personal songs I'd like to get done and out into the world in some form. Maybe the Patreon? Who knows! We'll figure it out.

Thanksgiving is the precursor to the big Xmas season. I've already started buying presents for the kids and Kitty D. I have a lot to be thankful for this year. Yes, even after this year of absolute shit. Right now I'm just thankful I'm awake and still here. Its all I need at the moment. And next week I'm going to cook the fuck out of a large 22 pound Turkey, Taters, Dumplings, Stuffing, Biscuits, Asparagus, Beans and more. To celebrate life and love. To think to the good days ahead.

Yeah, sometimes we're all deep in the shit. But we know the light keeps us safe and sane. We can be each others light. Let's keep striving for that.

KING DIAMOND Concert Review

Hey my droogies... I saw KING DIAMOND this past weekend.

My brother is a massive fan and when I saw he was coming to Michigan, I proposed the idea of going. We're both really heavy into music and we've never seen a concert together. Seemed a shame, so we took advantage of it. My newphew Storm went with us. They got to sport vintage King shirts and leather jackets. They don't make leather in my size so I kept my Saxon shirt and army over shirt. Opening band was EXODUS:

It was old school trash metal at its finest. I don't know their songs super well but it was a great set. Very energetic. Good to know those boys can be doing that style of music well into their 50's. (And Gene Simmons said Rock is Dead? Not according to what I've seen!) A quick set change and King came on...

The stage was quite the elaborate set up. He opened with WELCOME HOME, which I know very well. You worry that a man who has had so many scary surgeries and is pushing 60.. can he belt out that same falsetto type of screaming vocals like he did 30 years ago? Well from the first scream of GRANNNNDDMAAAAAA!!!!!! I turned to my brother and he back and me and we knew we were in for a ride.

After a couple King tunes, they did 3 Mercyful Fate songs which sounded great live. The band sounded tight and recreated very note and sound. Then they ran through the entire "ABIGAIL" album, which I am familiar with. I love concept albums.

All in all it was a killer show. We had balcony seats and any seat in Detroit's Fillmore is a good seat. Great venue to see shows in. And now I can cross these bands off the list. If he comes into your area, I highly recommend seeing King Diamond if you are into that kind of music. They sound just like the album did 30 years ago. And us old fogies can still rock. This weekend proved that for me.

______________

Busy week ahead of some overtime at the day job and I have to push StarSlam 2 along. Wish me luck. Everyone be safe out there.

Cheers, T

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I wasn't going to do this post, but I didn't want to end 2013 here with the downer that was the last posting. It did get a lot of hits though. Thanks very much for coming back and caring to read it. You never know what people are going to care about when you put it out in the world, even when its somethng small like a blog post from your frustrated mind. So I appreciate the hits. Biggest blog reads in a while now. Thanks for that.

I am happy to say that today is another day and after I posted that, I chained myself to my table to get some work done on commissions. And in the last couple days, I pencilled 10 small commissioned adult art pages for a regular client I have. I pencilled them on 8x11, inked and digitally colored most of them. Plus I did a piece I am giving to friends as a wedding present. It would be easy to say "Forget what I said, I'M BACK" but I know that the comfort demon is always right around the corner, ready to rub my shoulders and make me submit. He always wants me to lose my focus.

Some things help. Like seeing others' zeal for their own self-published works. Like BECKY CLOONAN. Also, JOE PEACOCK's writing always seems to be a great source of fuel for me to sip. Lastly, its the knowledge that no, I am not quitting. I never wanted to quit. I just get scared that it would be so easy to. Like the drive has dissapated as I get older, but I can adjust. Thats good to know. Deep in my core, I haven't changed and will not change. And that I take with me into 2014.

On my newest Idiothead Morning Show Podcast (Subscribe HERE for FREE!), I talked about 2013 and going into 2014 with some goals. Not resolutions, but things to look forward to.

1-GET ONLINE STORE GOING AGAIN - My books have been out of print for years now. I need to monotize what I already have and not worry about the next thing until I am taking care of the babies I got. So Anna will get redone. Pleasant Life will be collected and put in one big book. I plan on doing a 20th Anniversary Tshirt and get the Artbook printed finally. Plus more to come. I need to make $ on what I already own. Its important. I feel like a shlub saying I do books when all my books are sold out and I never have any at the shows.

2-CELEBRATE 20 YEARS - I've talked about it repeatedly that 2014 is my 20th year doing comics. I want to celebrate it. Talk about it more. At the cons, have balloons and cake. Show people why I am celebrating and let people know I care enough to celebrate it. I feel like I've earned that.

3-FINISH MY FOUR PROJECTS - First, the Starslam trade... which I only have about 20 more pages to go on it. Then release it online and a tradebook. Then there's TALES of SEQUENTIAL MAYHEM #3. My art is done. Just have to put it all together and launch a Kickstarter in January. That is all rolling. Lastly, my two written books: The short story/poem collection and the "My life working in the Sex Stores" autobiography. I am about 80 pages deep in both and I plan to finish both by March, with a first draft for each at least. The short story one I will likely self publish but I am seeking a publisher for the autobiography. But I am not worrying about that until I have a working draft. But all four things will be released next year. Guaranteed.

4-DISCOVER MORE MUSIC - Continue my vinyl rediscovery but also branch out into new music and keep the fuel going. An easy no-brainer.

5-TREAT MYSELF NICER - Joe Peacock said in his latest blog something I never thought about. He said that "I own myself." Thats true. I own my brain and my body. But I always put myself down and don't take care of myself. Physical, mental. I say these self-depricating jokes as a sort of defense mechanism to feel like I am taking the thunder away from anyone who would be thinking it for me. So no more fat jokes about myself. I've been taking energy vitamins. I'm going to continue that. Cut sugars and make one meal a day a healthy one. Just start slow. No fast food. Can't much anymore because the wife's student loans have caught up to us and we have to start paying on them! So just start with that and transition with the flow. But also with this, just to stop the doubts. Move forward. Keep going. Treat myself nicer. Rebuild confidence. Get louder. Celebrate more. Buy myself the more expensive soap or mouthwash instead of the generic one. Because I celebrate my value on this planet and I deserve it. and thats what I mean about treating myself nicer. Ya dig?

2013 had its strikes and gutters, ups and downs. I'd relist them, but I don't have to. Its behind me and only a fool trips on baggage behind them. I'm moving forward. Take me into your arms, 2014. I'm ready.

Everyone: Thanks for reading and caring to keep coming back to check out my little corner of the world. It means more than you know. Be safe, take care and I know you're going to have a great year!

Peace and love, T
